Pixies, self-titled/The Purple Tape, 2002 // In 1987 the Pixies got together and recorded a demo tape. Some of those songs ended up on their debut EP Come On Pilgrim, but the rest languished until 2002 when they were finally released, thus completing the so-called “Purple Tape” (see image above). In demo form these songs are raw and unpolished, yet they are fully formed and complete. Most of them sound close to their album counterparts, but here they’re lacking in spruced-up production values - not that Pixies ever made an overly-produced album (right?). Like any Pixies release - especially the early ones - there’s a wonderful sense of humor, and Black Francis’ voice is pure gold here screaming and yelping all over the place. They are freaks and they’re proud of such a label. Pixies is an album worth getting and remembering that sometimes a band comes into the world and immediately destroys everything that came before it.
Death to the Pixies.
